Where do public-sector pay scales come from?
They are set in official circulars and consolidated scales published by the HSE, the Department of Education, the Department of Public Expenditure and An Garda Síochána. Most reflect the 1 February 2026 pay adjustment under the current public service agreement.
How do increments work?
Public-sector pay rises by yearly increments along a fixed scale. A new starter begins at point 1 and moves up one point each year until reaching the maximum, with long-service increments available on some scales after that.
